Want to Try Overcoming Diarrhea with Kaolin

Kaolin is a type of mineral that is often used as medicine. Naturally, kaolin is like clay. After washing to remove sand and other impurities, this material has been used to treat diarrhea years ago. Even so, medical research states that the effectiveness of kaolin in dealing with diarrhea has not been fully proven. According to the US Food and Drug Administration (BPOM United States), the benefits of kaolin which has been believed to overcome diarrhea is not enough scientific evidence. Further research is needed to determine its efficacy. But, BPOM RI still allows diarrhea drugs containing kaolin to be sold on the market, and generally can be consumed as over-the-counter medicines. Diarrhea itself is a condition of loose stool during bowel movements or a more frequent than normal frequency of bowel movements. Diarrhea generally occurs due to consuming food or drinks that have been contaminated with viruses, bacteria, or parasites. In dealing with diarrhea, kaolin works by absorbing toxins and other substances from the intestine. Kaolin also helps form or condense liquid stool within 1-2 days. However, kaolin cannot reduce the amount of fluid that is often lost during diarrhea. Kaolin does not have the ability to fight bacteria, so it is not recommended to be used as the only treatment to treat bacterial diarrhea.

Consider the Following Before Taking Kaolin

Kaolin seems to be safe for consumption, but there are still side effects that might arise. Constipation can occur, especially if kaolin is consumed by children or parents. Be careful giving them kaolin. Kaolin is also not recommended for children under 3 years of age. In addition, potential side effects from consuming kaolin are allergic reactions, such as difficulty breathing, itching, rashes, chest tightness, swelling of the tongue, lips, mouth, or face. Substances contained in preparations of kaolin drugs are not absorbed by the placenta so it is possible that kaolin is safe for consumption by pregnant women. Even so, animal studies show a link between kaolin and anemia and hypokalemia in pregnancy. To avoid undesirable things, it is better for pregnant women to avoid or consult a doctor if you want to consume kaolin. Use of kaolin also needs to be careful if you are taking certain drugs, such as digoxin, quinidine, clindamycin, or trimethoprim. Because the content of kaolin can affect the performance of these drugs. Also be careful if you are taking herbal medicines, dietary supplements, or are allergic to certain foods or medicines. When consuming kaolin, it is advisable to consume lots of water. Take kaolin according to the dosage listed on the package or as directed by your doctor. If after consuming kaolin for two days, you feel that nothing has changed or your diarrhea is getting worse, stop using it. See a doctor as soon as possible to get further treatment.
